Premium open-world RPG

Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon is a paid role-playing game from Awaken Realms Digital. This game is set in an open world filled with medieval and high fantasy elements from the Arthurian legends. In another entry from the Tainted Grail franchise, you enter a plague-ridden version of Avalon. Find the faction you will support and realize a unique future for the entire island.

With immersive, fully 3D graphics, Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon is a fine fantasy game that retains the unique cross between RPG and deckbuilding that the franchise is known for similar to Tainted Grail: Conquest.

Restore Avalon to its former glory

Like other entries in the franchise, Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon also revolves around the Wyrdness, which is a mysterious force that warps the reality in a dark, chaotic manner. However, in this alternate Avalon, King Arthur is no more and the rest of the myths have fallen. As the people look for hope, your character arrives. This familiar yet intriguing premise makes the game immediately appealing.

Avalon is a significant upgrade compared to its predecessor in terms of visuals. While both games feature a 3D isometric view of the overworld, Conquest used to have the stereotypical turn-based RPG battle where characters are lined up and take turns attacking. In Avalon, however, you get to continue doing battles in a first-person perspective, with an all-new layout for the cards and the enemies—making the game feel more immersive.

Additionally, it also features a multiplayer co-op of up to four players, making it a good virtual alternative to fantasy multiplayer games like tabletops. However, fans of the franchise are already aware that it doesn’t offer the Avalon story in its entirety. The board games, which serve as the inspiration for the video game, also have a prequel and sequel in Age of Legends and The Last Knight, respectively.

Early Access: The First Chapter Unveiled

Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon has entered Early Access, featuring the first chapter of the game, Horns of the South, which offers around 10-15 hours of content. Although this version includes 90% of major game mechanics, it may still lack final polish and contain minor bugs. Throughout the Early Access period, which is expected to last for 9-16 months, players' saves might be deleted with major patches. As more chapters are added, the final version of the game will receive additional visual and audio polish.

New Features in Early Access

The Early Access version of Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon brings several improvements and additions to the core game systems. These include the introduction of thievery systems, dual wielding of weapons, and enhancements to stealth gameplay and melee fighting. Players can also expect player-owned houses, gardening, fishing, and other engaging activities, along with plenty of extra content.

Key Features: Unravel the Dark World

Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon offers a true open-world experience, where players can embark on unexpected quests and adventures throughout the island. With a dark, complex story that spans over 1,000 years, the game invites players to explore hidden caves, dungeons, ancient ruins, and the mysterious Wyrdness. Customize your character, make friends and enemies, and engage in trade, crafting, and cooking with various supporting systems. The game is inspired by the Tainted Grail board game, created by renowned Polish fantasy writer Krzysztof Piskorski.

A fun virtual tabletop

Overall, Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon is a great fantasy experience that you can also share with friends. With an all-new premise and an overhauled deckbuilding combat system, it is definitely a breath of fresh air even for experienced players. However, while it’s a good standalone entry into these kinds of games, it feels incomplete in its story, at least until the other parts of the Avalon trilogy arrive.

PROS

  • Overhauled, first-person deckbuilding combat
  • Allows up to four players in cooperative games
  • Premise builds on Arthurian legends

CONS

  • Lacks the other story elements
